The United States healthcare system is the most innovative and complex system in the world. On one hand, the best schools, talent, and technology dot the landscape. On the other, those competencies along with some decisions by the Social Security Administration have created a system that is bordering on consuming 20% of U.S. GDP. Having spent time in the hospital as a patient and working in the health information technology space since February of 2010 have been some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Social and genetic determinants coupled with the unbelievable standards of living in the United States are THE reasons there is so much healthcare consumption. This blog is an attempt to elucidate and synthesize how we got here, where healthcare is heading, and how future generations of healthcare consumers can be just that, consumers.
